09/29/18 Fossil Creek National Public LAnds Day Cleanup
Coconino National Forest - Red Rock District
We celebrated National Public Lands Day 2018 by partnering with our friends at Mountain Chicks for our 3rd trail cleanup together. We took a group of volunteers to Fossil Creek to remove trash from the Waterfall Trail as well as the Waterfall Trailhead parking lot, 1/4 mile of dirt road to the Ivring/Flume Trailhead parking lot, and an area below the parking lot. Once we arrived at the waterfall, we relaxed, explored the area, and enjoyed the water. We continued picking up trash on the hike back and hopefully inspired a large group headed to the waterfall to pack out all of their trash.
We collected 43.7 pounds of trash, which may not seem like a lot, but the majority of it was micro trash that could have easily been packed out the same way it was packed in. We found a lot of bottle tops, hair ties, the corners of granola bar wrappers, straws, water and beer bottles, shoes, socks, a towel, styrofoam cups, a ridiculous amount of cigarette butts, chip bags, the plastic packaging from a snorkel, pieces of paper, and a lot of other random pieces of trash. Please make a plan for your trash when you go outdoors!
