1,744 square feet of graffiti removed from Devil’s Canyon
In 2020, we received grant funding from ON Semiconductor, REI Co-op, and Resolution Copper for our Graffiti Removal Program and a graffiti removal project at Devil’s Canyon near Superior, Arizona. This project was originally scheduled for late 2020, but due to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and then waiting for the weather warm up in the canyon for optimal graffiti removal conditions, the project was moved to early April 2021.
If you have driven through Superior on the way to Globe, then you have driven through the Queen Creek tunnel and one of the most beautiful canyons in the state, Devil’s Canyon. Unfortunately, people have been tagging the rocks and boulders in the canyon for decades and most recently as early 2021.
Devil’s Canyon is extremely important to the outdoor community and the San Carlos Apache. It was an honor to make such a big impact in this amazing and culturally significant space.
Graffiti that could be seen from your vehicle as you drive through the canyon and what you could see when you stopped at all of the pull-off areas is something we’ve dreamed of removing long before Natural Restorations existed. This project has been on our graffiti removal bucket list for a long time and we are grateful to the organizations that made this project possible: ON Semiconductor, REI Co-op, and Resolution Copper. Thank you for helping us remove 1,744 sq ft of graffiti!
In April, we contracted 3 military veterans on our 5-member Dedicated Restoration Team and got to work on this project. Veterans working with us on this project benefited from our program not only through paid contract work but also through spending time in nature with other veterans. We all agreed that this was the most beautiful project site any of us had ever worked on. It was extremely rewarding both mentally and physically to accomplish this project and make a lasting impact on the state.
Thank you to everyone at Resolution Copper and the Tonto National Forest - Globe Ranger District for providing access to the project area. We would also like to thank Todd Pryor and Manny Ramirez from the Town of Superior for providing our team with access to water for our water trailer.

Please do not use rocks & boulders for any kind of memorial, "art", profession of love to your sweetie, or thinking you’re being helpful by painting arrows marking a trail. Not only is it illegal, it also detracts from the beauty of the area. Wild areas must remain wild! Regardless of your intentions or what you hope to accomplish, it's wrong. Leave no trace!
Our hope is that by removing the graffiti as seen in the pictures below, fewer people will make the mistake of thinking it is okay to tag the rocks and boulders. We believe everyone should be able to experience nature without graffiti.
Please contact the non-emergency # for the area if you see anyone vandalizing public lands & contact us when you see graffiti or trash in outdoor recreation & wilderness areas.
Some of the boulders do not look very big in the before & after pictures. For reference, in the photos below, Justin Corey is applying graffiti remover to the boulder & he is 6’3” tall.
Being better humans starts with not taking a stencil and spray paint into nature to vandalize rocks and boulders!
