498 square feet of graffiti removed from Devil’s Canyon

In 2023, we received grant funding from Resolution Copper for our Graffiti Removal Program to remove graffiti from Devil’s Canyon and Magma Mine Road near Superior, Arizona.

If you have driven through Superior on the way to Globe, then you have driven through the Queen Creek tunnel and one of the most beautiful canyons in the state, Devil’s Canyon.

Unfortunately, people tagged rocks and boulders in the canyon after our team removed over 1,700 square feet of graffiti from Devil’s Canyon in 2021.

Devil’s Canyon is extremely important to the San Carlos Apache and the outdoor community. It was an honor to make such a big impact in this amazing and culturally significant space.

We removed graffiti that could be seen from your vehicle as you drive through the canyon, graffiti you could see when you stopped at the pull-off areas, & graffiti in the canyon not visible from your vehicle. We also removed graffiti along Magma Mine Road.

Thank you, Resolution Copper, for helping us remove 498 square feet of graffiti!

In May, we contracted 3 military veterans on our 5-member Dedicated Restoration Team and got to work on this project. Veterans working with us on this project benefited from our program not only through paid contract work but also through spending time in nature with other veterans. It was extremely rewarding to accomplish this project & make a lasting impact on the state.

We would like to thank Manual Castillo and Toddy Pryor from the Town of Superior for providing our team access to water for our water trailer. Thank you to everyone at the Superior Fire Department for helping us fill our water trailer when the pump was not working at the water treatment facility. Thank you to everyone at Box 8 Ranch for letting us store our water trailer overnight during the project.

Please do not use rocks & boulders for any kind of memorial, "art", profession of love to your sweetie, or thinking you’re being helpful by painting arrows marking a trail. Not only is it illegal, it also detracts from the beauty of the area. Wild areas must remain wild! Regardless of your intentions or what you hope to accomplish, it's wrong. Leave no trace!

Our hope is that by removing the graffiti as seen in these pictures, fewer people will make the mistake of thinking it is okay to tag the rocks and boulders.

We believe everyone should be able to experience nature without graffiti.

It was sad to see so many recent tags on the rocks and bounders!

Please contact the non-emergency # for the area if you see anyone vandalizing public lands & contact us when you see graffiti or trash in outdoor recreation & wilderness areas.

Some of the graffiti we removed had to be done in phases because of coverup paint. We found some of the original photos to go along with our before & afters for a few of the sites.

Thank you to everyone at Resolution Copper for supporting this project!
