June 2021
1,257 square feet of graffiti removed from mount elden
In 2020, we received grant funding from UniSource Energy Services to continue our graffiti removal work along the Mt. Elden Loop Trail at Mt. Elden in Flagstaff, Arizona. We completed the project with our Dedicated Restoration Team in early June 2021 when the weather was optimal for graffiti removal.
Our Dedicated Restoration Team removed 1,257 square feet of graffiti from the boulders along the Mt. Elden Loop Trail, around the eastern side of the mountain from where our team removed graffiti in 2019.
In 2019, we received grant funding from REI and Unisource Energy Services Coconino to remove graffiti from a different part of Mount Eldon. Our Dedicated Restoration Team removed 1,375 square feet of graffiti from the boulders along the Mt. Elden Loop Trail . You can view that project HERE and you can view our 2021 project photos below.
We would like to thank everyone at UniSource Energy Services for their continued support of our projects. We would also like to thank everyone at the U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest for their help and support of this project.
In June, we contracted 3 military veterans on our 5-member Dedicated Restoration Team and got to work on this project. Veterans working with us on this project benefited from our program not only through paid contract work but also through spending time in nature with other veterans. It was extremely rewarding to continue our work on this project and make a lasting impact on the state.
Please do not use rocks & boulders for any kind of memorial, "art", profession of love to your sweetie, or thinking you’re being helpful by painting arrows marking a trail. Not only is it illegal, it also detracts from the beauty of the area. Wild areas must remain wild! Regardless of your intentions or what you hope to accomplish, it's wrong. Leave No Trace!
This particular graffiti panel consisted of multiple layers dating back to the early 1980’s. Unfortunately, due to the porous surface of the rock, some of the paint soaked in deeply and left shadowing that we are unable to fully remove without removing stone.
Please contact the non-emergency # for the area if you see anyone vandalizing public lands & contact us when you see graffiti or trash in outdoor recreation & wilderness areas
Our hope is that by removing the graffiti as seen in these photos, fewer people will make the mistake of thinking it is okay to tag the rocks and boulders. We believe everyone should be able to experience nature without graffiti.
Thank you to everyone at Unisource energy services for supporting our mount elden graffiti removal project
